IVEAGH PRIMARY SCHOOL AND NURSERY UNIT

AN ADVENTURE IN LEARNING

A A A

Aims

The school is characterised by the following general policy statement.

Our school will provide each child with a wide range of experiences in a secure, happy and stimulating learning environment.  Through open communication, partnership and commitment within the school and the wider community we will enable children to realise their potential.

GENERAL AIMS

It is the policy of this school that children should be given ample opportunities to develop self-respect, self-confidence and independence.

They will be encouraged to be mindful of the needs and desires of other, and also to acquire an acceptable set of moral values and standards of behaviour.

In all that they do children will be encouraged to develop their potential to its fullest extent.

It is to be hoped that if such opportunities are given the children will be on the way to becoming happy, well-adjusted members of society.

SPECIFIC AIMS

It will be our policy to provide adequate opportunities for the children to:

1) Communicate clearly and confidently

This will involve the development of oral, written and listening skills.  Children will be encouraged to speak clearly, fluently and confidently in individual, group and class situations.  They will also be required to develop a legible and practical style of handwriting along with satisfactory standards of spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage.  Listening skills will be developed by providing ample time and opportunities for such.

2) Read fluently, accurately and with understanding

Our main aim in this respect will be to help children to enjoy reading and to recognise the value of reading skills.  Appropriate resources and opportunities will be provided for both oral and silent reading.

3) Acquire basic mathematical skills and understand appropriate mathematical concepts

Children will be taught basic computational skills and will be encouraged to apply these with speed and accuracy as appropriate.  Children will have ample opportunities to develop the skills of reasoning and problem solving.  As far as possible the development of mathematical skills will be made relevant to situations in the home, school and environment.

4) Acquire some knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live

Children will be made aware of the geographical, historical and social aspects of the local environment.  They will also be exposed to information regarding other times, places and cultures.  Educational visits and field trips will play an important part in this area.  Children will be required to master basic scientific ideas in both natural and physical sciences.

5) To develop qualities of mind, spirit, feeling and imagination

This will involve acquiring sufficient knowledge and control, not only of their own bodies, but also of the various tools and instruments required to be able to use music, drama, physical activity, arts and craft as a means of expression.
