Helping Your Child Use Their Hands

We think of hands in school being needed for writing and cutting, but we use our hands all the time for dressing, feeding, opening doors, using a computer/phone/iPad, holding things and communicating.  We need them to be strong, flexible and controlled to gain success in tasks.  If a task is too difficult and we don't succeed we are likely not to be motivated to try again.  If you are there to help or adapt the task to make it easier, and so get success, this helps motivation.  For example, if a young child is finding threading beads for a bracelet difficult, use a pipe cleaner to make it easier.  Show them how to do the first five beads and allow them to add the last one to finish the bracelet, this will lead to a feeling of success.
